Re: German Bundestag Election 2017 and 'Holocaust Politics'

[The Holocaust] is only held together by force, and that will never last "1000 years". Some talk of growing anti-Holocaust (i.e., revisionist) sentiment in Germany, but if this is the case it does seem inevitably tied to the success of the AfD for the time being. A few dozen polls in the ...

German political parties' Views on Holocaust Issue; a 'Holocaust Continuum' in German Politics

The AfD says "Yes", but this isn't a non-negotiable "Yes" from them. There is quite some of their politicians that are critical of the "Remembrance-Culture" in Germany, which is fixated on Hitler, Holocaust and WW2. None of the "denies the Holocaust" of cours...

Re: German Bundestag Election 2017 and 'Holocaust Politics'

Interesting what you say about Egon Bahr. When I look through German magazines I'd say that between 1949 and the 1970s Germany was marked by "Wiederaufbau", WW2 and NS were taboo subjects This seems right in general. But the taboo against any hint of Holocaust Revisionism is much stronger...

Re: Hello / 'where did they go?'

Anyway, amongst all the other things I've got be getting on with, I'll be looking up the leads you've given me. Thanks. One useful strategy is to plug in a "site:codoh.com [search term] " Google search to find information on specific topics that come up in your research. For example, to t...

German Bundestag Election 2017 and 'Holocaust Politics'

The latest German Federal election is next Sunday, September 24th, 2017. Angela Merkel will almost certainly have another four-year term as Chancellor. Six parties are likely to enter the new Bundestag. The 'Center' bloc (Merkel's CDU; SPD), which is the 2013-to-Present governing coalition, will mos...

the first-ever use of the phrase 'extermination camp' in the NYT was in an article dated August 10th, 1944 What was the war situation and political situation in late July 1944 and early August 1944? The Red Army was driving west, for the first time conducting major operations outside Soviet territo...

Uses of the phrase "extermination camp" in New York Times, 1944

Hektor has inspired me to look into the New York Times archives, searchable by keyword; brief summaries of the articles are generally available online. I find this: In the New York Times [NYT] archive , the first-ever use of the phrase 'extermination camp' in the NYT was in an article dated August 1...

Re: Origin of the expression "extermination camp".

First appearence seem to be in the War Refugee board Report but i'm not sure. This is what you refer to, I believe (from Wikipedia "Vrba–Wetzler Report"): Under the title "German Extermination Camps—Auschwitz and Birkenau," the Auschwitz Protocols was first published in full in ...

Re: Origin of the expression "extermination camp".

It is amazing the armchair research one can do today: Here are all the references that Google immediately pulls up for the 1944-1947 appearances of the term "Extermination Camp" in English. I will reproduce each excerpt below. None of these books seem to be accessible in full via Google, b...

Re: Origin of the expression "extermination camp".

Try setting smoothing to "0" for precise results (otherwise it averages over a period of years). 1944 is the first result in Google's English database, at zero-smoothing. Interesting side notes on its historical trajectory: Use of the term peaks in 1945-1947 , the original "First Wave...

Re: Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Holocaust-as-Extortion

Arnold doesn't have to deal with people shaming his family, and the Wiesenthal Center gets a sweet endorsement deal Perhaps this quid-pro-quo that we see between Arnold and the organized Holocaust Lobby is a microcosm for the entirety of post-Holocaust German politics. Some forces in German politic...

'Where did they go?'

how many jews were in Europe before the 2nd world war and how many were there after? The ones that disappeared, where did they go? Very short answer: Some died, most emigrated. Slightly longer answer: Certainly hundreds of thousands of Jews, perhaps even a million, died of various causes in the 194...

Dunkirk (2017 film) as a groundbreaking non-anti-German WWII film

The film Dunkirk has widely been praised as a masterpiece of cinematography. I have recently seen it. I want to review the film's relevance to the historiography of WWII, our understanding of that war, and of the Germans' role in that war. In Hollywood, this generally is something like "uniquel...

Re: Americans Who "Saw" The Holocaust

Another idea: Compare U.S./British veterans' stories recorded in the 1946 to 1970s period against U.S./British veterans' stories told in the 1980s and later. The latter period is when the Holocaust became cemented, became the cornerstone of Western history and culture. Through the 1970s, there was a...
