One key cornerstone of propaganda and guilt is making Austrians aware of the fact that immediately after the Anschluss, the Hitlerites began to humiliate Jews for no reason at all, by making them scrub the streets with toothbrushes. This scene has even been replicated in an Austrian film called "Bockerer", where a Nazi officer spills a bucket of dirty water onto an otherwise clean street and makes several Jews go on their knees with brushes and clean up the mess. This is a famous Austrian film, so scenes like these have burned themselves into the collective memory of that nation's people. Here is a historical photo:
But what is the historical truth? I began to search for the existence of more photos documenting this phenomenon. Going to a mainstream and trusted site auch as Yad Vashem's database yielded me the following caption (I use bit.ly to shorten the url that is extended because of the search terms)
The caption reads: "The day after the Anschluss on 13/03/1938, the Jews of Vienna were forced to erase the election slogans of the "Homeland Front" from the walls and streets."
Aha. So it seems it wasn't merely pointless humiliation after all. Looks like the Jews were made to clean graffiti and other (chalk-based?) slogans written on the streets.
Some historical context provided by furtherglory:
If you look closely at the photo, you will see that the Jews are using a lot of soap as they scrub. This was not some symbolic humiliation, designed to taunt the Jews. The Jews were forced to scrub Austrian Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg’s Fatherland Front slogans off the sidewalks of Vienna.
In 1932, Austria had become a dictatorship under Dr. Englebert Dollfuss and the Nazi party had been banned; Austrian Nazis such as Ernst Kaltenbrunner had been put into prison camps and forced to work at hard labor.
Dr. Kurt von Schuschnigg was the leader of an Austrian anti-Nazi organization called the Fatherland Front. Dr. Schuschnigg succeeded Dr. Dollfuss as Federal Chancellor in 1934 after Dollfuss was assassinated by the Austrian Nazis, whom Dollfuss had tried to suppress, and the anti-Nazi dictatorship of Austria continued under Schuschnigg.
In his book, entitled The Brutal Takeover, Dr. Schuschnigg wrote the following:
"About the same time (as the ultimatum) the German radio announced that a bloody communist rising had broken out in Austria; there were hundreds of dead; the Austrian government was no longer in control of the situation. This was pure invention. Nothing had happened which could conceivably justify armed intervention in the eyes of international law."
Hitler’s excuse for taking over the independent nation of Austria and incorporating it into a Greater German Reich was that he was “protecting” the Austrian people from a Communist uprising. But why did the Nazis scapegoat the Jews and blame them for the slogans of the Fatherland Front on the sidewalks of Vienna? It was because Dr. Schusschnigg’s government was considered to be Communistic and Hitler equated Communism with the Jews; Hitler’s term for Communism was “Judeo-Bolshevism.”
(from the comments:)
“In the years before the March 1938 Anschluss, Austria was ruled by the Dollfuss-Schuschnigg regime, a repressive one-party dictatorship that called itself a “Christian Corporative” state. It imprisoned National Socialists, Marxists and other dissidents. But there was one important section of Austria’s population that supported the dictatorial regime. That was the Jewish community, which made up 2.8 percent of the total. As Prof. Bukey writes: “The Jewish community regarded the Dollfuss-Schuschnigg regime as its protector … Under the Dollfuss-Schuschnigg regime the Jewish community recovered a measure of governmental protection it had not enjoyed since the days of the Habsburgs. The public was outraged.” ” – http://www.ihr.org/other/weber2011soundofmusic.html
‘I heard of cases of Jews being obliged to go down on their knees and scrub out the Schuschnigg Party crosses that had been painted on the pavements. This was a repetition of the methods employed by the Schuschnigg regime, which compelled Nazis to remove swastikas in the same way.

But wait, it gets better. Quoting from the IHR link earlier, historian Mark Weber re-quotes the following from Evan Burr Bukey (a professor of history at the University of Arkansas), "Hitler's Austria: Popular Sentiment in the Nazi Era, 1938-1945" (University of North Carolina Press, 2000):
In spite of their small numbers, Austria's Jews wielded vast and disproportionate wealth and power. As Prof. Bukey writes: "The predominant position of the Jews in an impoverished country only intensified the fear and loathing of the Austrians masses. As we have already seen, Jewish businesses and financial institutions managed much of the country's economic life. At the time of the Anschluss three-quarters of Vienna's newspapers, banks and textile firms were in Jewish hands ... The extraordinary success of the Jews in the learned professions also inspired jealously and spite. Over 50 percent of Austria's attorneys, physicians and dentists were Jewish."
On the eve of the Anschluss, Austria's economy was in a catastrophic condition, and nearly one-third of Austrians were out of work. But people also knew that, just across the border in the German Reich, unemployment had been eliminated, living standards and working conditions had greatly improved, and economic, social and cultural life was flourishing.
And before anyone tries to slander Bukey's reputation or cast doubt over his analysis, here is an award he received recently:

(by the Austrian government, no less! So we have a guy saying Jews dominated Austria's pre-Anschluss economy while 33% of Austrians were out of work, and he is recognized and honored by the Austrian state, woops)
So by putting all the pieces of the puzzle into context, we can understand why some Jews were made to scrub the streets by the Nazis, as they had been supporters of the totalitarian anti-Nazi Dollfuss/Schuschnigg regime, and were simply made to clean the various slogans off the streets.
Of course, these details probably won't be mentioned in the state-run propaganda documentaries which simply focus on the "oh, the humanity!" aspect of some Jews being told to clean the streets, a task otherwise reserved for goyim.
