Google and the Jews

Postby Hektor » 1 decade 2 years ago (Fri Nov 30, 2007 6:42 am)

An explanation of our search results.

If you recently used Google to search for the word "Jew," you may have seen results that were very disturbing. We assure you that the views expressed by the sites in your results are not in any way endorsed by Google. We'd like to explain why you're seeing these results when you conduct this search.

A site's ranking in Google's search results relies heavily on computer algorithms using thousands of factors to calculate a page's relevance to a given query. Sometimes subtleties of language cause anomalies to appear that cannot be predicted. A search for "Jew" brings up one such unexpected result.

If you use Google to search for "Judaism," "Jewish" or "Jewish people," the results are informative and relevant. So why is a search for "Jew" different? One reason is that the word "Jew" is often used in an anti-Semitic context. Jewish organizations are more likely to use the word "Jewish" when talking about members of their faith. The word has become somewhat charged linguistically, as noted on websites devoted to Jewish topics such as these:

http://shakti.trincoll.edu/~mendele/vol01/vol01.174
http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/jonah081500.asp

Someone searching for information on Jewish people would be more likely to enter terms like "Judaism," "Jewish people," or "Jews" than the single word "Jew." In fact, prior to this incident, the word "Jew" only appeared about once in every 10 million search queries. Now it's likely that the great majority of searches on Google for "Jew" are by people who have heard about this issue and want to see the results for themselves.

The beliefs and preferences of those who work at Google, as well as the opinions of the general public, do not determine or impact our search results. Individual citizens and public interest groups do periodically urge us to remove particular links or otherwise adjust search results. Although Google reserves the right to address such requests individually, Google views the comprehensiveness of our search results as an extremely important priority. Accordingly, we do not remove a page from our search results simply because its content is unpopular or because we receive complaints concerning it. We will, however, remove pages from our results if we believe the page (or its site) violates our Webmaster Guidelines, if we believe we are required to do so by law, or at the request of the webmaster who is responsible for the page.

We apologize for the upsetting nature of the experience you had using Google and appreciate your taking the time to inform us about it.

Sincerely,
The Google Team

I wonder if Google plans any more earnest, carefully worded, hand-wringing explanations of the results of a search on the word "goyim" on their search engine anytime soon.

What's going on at google

Its been going on for some time now. If you put the word 'Jew' into Google, the first site returned was jewwatch.com, for what, years?. So Jewish interests regularly 'computer bomb' Google with the word 'Jew' and then seek Wikipedia. So we see the #1 site regularly changing places between Wikipedia and JewWatch. JewWatch says they have 637 Million Pages Served. So I guess it will be a long battle.

It's kind of a Dilema - For google and the jews.
On the one hand some of the results may be pretty embarassing for Jews that believe they need to cover up something. So they will try to use their influence to pressurize google. On the other google is not just a small company that could be threatened with boykotts legal harrassment and the like. They do have some weight. And they have a reputation to defend. That is the perception that people will find relevant results at google, which they do using the term Jew  . So both parties are trying to find some compromise here.

Meanwhile certain issues become very obvious and that is that the Jews are an influential strongly networking and cooperating community that knows how to manipulate opinions and opinionmakers on certain issues.

Hopefully more intelligent people will start to ask questions.

What "incident"?

Aside from that & "computer bombs", perhaps the wider community is waking up to "those" people.

I discovered a while back myself while looking for Jew Watch. I'm wondering if or when it's going to become a default warning on our PC Screens, thus preventing us from entering sites.

What is interesting is that Google knows the result is being manipulated with a computer program. This is against Google's rules, yet they don't seem to have the desire to do anything about it.

... How do you know google knows that their results are manipulated by a computer program?

I've read about this happening and that their attempts to bring down the results for jewwatch.com - There were campaigns against this web site. And one of the ways to go against a site is using software.

Now I wonder, if one can prove that there have been rule violations and, if one could go against this by writing complaints to google.

Jew Watch was #1 on Google for "jew" searches for three years, until Wikipedia started a clever Google bomb campaign which often unseats Jew Watch as #1. "If I had done with Jew Watch what Wikipedia has done," Mr. Weltner said, "I would have been removed from Google for abusing its algorithm. But for Wikipedia, being a Jewish-owned site, it is possibly okay. This is the usual double standard that we are all used to in America and that you can read about on Jew Watch."

I read about it Hektor. It made a lot of news. Search "Jew Watch Google Bomb"

That's still not good enough for another online organization, however, which has launched its own effort to push Jew Watch off Google via "Google bombing," a technique that exploits Google's search methodology of basing rankings on how many sites link to a given page. Daniel Sieradski, through his influential Web log Jewschool, is urging visitors to pepper any sites they control with links to the entry on "Jew" in online encyclopedia Wikipedia. http://www.news.com/2100-1038_3-5186012.html
It seems that someone from outside had a google bombing campaign running. Wikipedia was linked to for other reasons as well: It already has a nice pageranking  . So it's most like to jump over the head of http://www.jewwatch.com/ .
But that would mean that http://www.jewwatch.com/ is now on the 2nd or 3rd place of the google.com search. And being on the first 10 is all that counts when being listed on google.com.

So they'd have to get ten websites higher then http://www.jewwatch.com/ to subvert the result. Talking about it, we could use some serious search engine optimization as well.

Here is another example for such a campaign:
