WW2 Newsreels on Concentration Camps

Postby labview1958 » 1 decade 1 year ago (Sun Dec 13, 2009 8:09 am)

I have watching some old newsreels on WW2 holocaust. Why are some of the prisoners totally nude in front of American GI's. Should the prisoners cover their private parts? Are they straight from the gas chambers?

Might want to retitle this thread "nakedness in camp footage."

That's a good question. I've noticed that too. Psyche Warfare and the OSS was behind some of that footage. (there are threads about that here) and they had them take their clothes off to show how thin they were. That is usually the reason for the nakedness: to show how thin they are. However it's perceived by the viewer as a clothes shortage in the camp or something. The video "Buchenwald" at holocaustdenialvideos.com shows director Billy Wilder setting up shots, and in that footage they sometimes cut out the pant legs so that they wouldn't be naked but so you could see their thin legs.

Then there's the Soviet footage called the Mogilev film, which is meant to look like the Germans filmed it. The "mental patients" are naked outside. The scary shadows of SS men on brick walls shows that it's the Soviets, not the Germans who made it. Here the nakedness adds to the inhumaneness and scariness. See stills at:

They violated all notions of basic human decency to parade naked people (mostly men) around in front of cameras for use as propaganda footage. The images were quite powerful and usually form the bulk of the knowledge that the average American has about camp liberations. The message conveyed in these propaganda flicks remains cemented in the public mind, Those damned Germans! Look what they did!

I've never looked at this before, but agreed, it looks like one of those "Soviet put up jobs" that Pressac described. It would be interesting to know the muffler placement in that car to see if the pipe was even in the right place.
