intolerant Rabbi wants to censor the WWW

Postby Goethe » 1 decade 5 years ago (Sun Jul 11, 2004 3:54 am)

I can't imagine what it is on the web that bothers this little man.
"The web is not a debating society. It's there for marketing and advertising. We need to apply pre-Net rules: create a policy and stick to it."

--Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Museum of Tolerance in a presentation at the Virginia Bar Association Annual Meeting on January 14, 2000.

Associate Dean?

We know the SWCs marketing campaigns too well - marketing for the holocau$t industry.

I found a story about the Rabbi's speech in the Virginia Bar Association Journal at, scroll down to the article "Meeting Close-up: The Dark Side of the Net". Some quotes, but not the transcript, unfortunately.

Rabbi Cooper solemnly pays lip service to free speech by informing us that the best answer to hate speech is more speech, before moving on to tell how the SWC managed to pressure Yahoo into closing 90 "hate sites" - as defined by the SWC, of course. You get the feeling Rabbi Cooper doesn't have a great sense of irony...

I love Goethe's quote from the speech though, it has that sense of inadvertently letting the truth slip out. God forbid people should be able to debate ideas on the web, instead of doing their consumerly duty at Ebay!

Dean? Just that is absurd.
<?php if ($Holocaust == false ) {deny_repeatedly(); } else { investigate(); } ?>
Homage to Catalin Haldan
